DHA License Renewal Process for Healthcare Professionals in Dubai

Your DHA license renewal is not an event you can afford to leave to the last minute. The Dubai Health Authority has clear requirements, fixed timelines, and a fee structure that punishes late action. Healthcare professionals who understand the process in advance move through it quickly. Those who encounter it for the first time with four weeks to spare face delays, penalties, and avoidable stress routinely.

I have guided more than 300 healthcare professionals through DHA License Renewal Process and renewals over my career. The renewal process is straightforward when everything is in place. The challenge is that most professionals do not realise something is missing until the Sheryan Portal tells them so — by then, the clock is already working against them.

This guide walks through every stage of the DHA renewal process: eligibility, documents, CME requirements, DataFlow verification, the Sheryan submission, fees, and what happens if your licence lapses.

For full details on the initial application process, see our guide: DHA Licence Application Process and Step-by-Step Approval Guide.

When to Start Your DHA License Renewal Process

The DHA opens the renewal window 90 days before your licence expiry date. That is when you should begin, not when the window opens. Starting at 90 days gives you enough time to identify and resolve issues before they push you past your expiry date.

The consequences of a late renewal are concrete and immediate. Your licence expires, you cannot legally practise, and a penalty fee applies from day one. After six months beyond the expiry date, the file closes permanently. You are no longer renewing. You are starting a new application from scratch.

Six month rule: If your DHA licence lapses and you do not renew within six months of the expiry date, the file is closed permanently. A full new application, including fresh DataFlow PSV, is required. Late penalties also apply from day one of expiry.

Eligibility Requirements for DHA Licence Renewal

Before you open a renewal application in the Sheryan Portal, every one of the following eligibility conditions must be met. The portal checks them automatically. Any shortfall will halt the application until resolved.

  • CME and CPD hours: all annual continuing education requirements for your profession must be completed and recorded in your DHA profile
  • Good Standing Certificate (GSC): must be issued within the past three months. An older certificate will be rejected regardless of its content
  • Malpractice insurance: must be current and cover your DHA licensed scope of practice under your current employer
  • Emirates ID: must be current and valid
  • DataFlow PSV: must be on file and current. A fresh report may be required under specific circumstances covered in the next section

Documents Required for DHA Licence Renewal

The document list for a renewal differs from an initial application. You are not resubmitting your entire file. You are confirming that the current elements remain valid and submitting those that require periodic renewal.

Documents that must be refreshed for every renewal

  • Good Standing Certificate issued within the past three months
  • Malpractice Insurance Certificate covering your current employer and scope
  • CME completion log exported from the DHA eLearning system
  • Current Emirates ID

Documents that remain on your DHA file

Your original qualifications, degree certificates, and DataFlow PSV report remain on file unless the circumstances described below apply. Do not resubmit these unless specifically requested.

When a fresh DataFlow PSV is required for renewal

  • You have added a new qualification since your last verification
  • Your existing PSV report is more than five years old
  • There is a discrepancy flagged between your current credentials and what is held on file
  • You are switching from one UAE authority to another

DHA Licence Renewal Fees for 2026

The DHA fee schedule for 2026 is confirmed by profession. The late penalty is charged in addition to the standard renewal fee, not instead of it.

ProfessionDHA Renewal Fee (2026)Late Penalty (post expiry)
Physician / DentistAED 3,000AED 600
Nurse / MidwifeAED 1,000AED 200
Allied Health ProfessionalAED 1,000AED 200
PharmacistAED 2,000AED 400

A physician renewing after expiry pays AED 3,600 total. A nurse or AHP renewing after expiry pays AED 1,200 total. These are avoidable costs. Start your renewal on time.

In addition to the authority fee, budget for DataFlow PSV costs of AED 1,150 to 1,500 if a fresh report is needed, and for any CME course fees if you need to complete outstanding hours before submitting.

How to Submit Your Renewal Through the Sheryan Portal

All DHA License Renewal Process are submitted through the Sheryan Portal at services.dha.gov.ae. Login requires your Emirates ID credentials via UAE PASS. There is no paper submission route.

The submission sequence

  1. Log in via UAE PASS and navigate to your Sheryan dashboard
  2. Select Renew Professional Licence
  3. Review your profile data as already populated by the portal. Do not assume it is correct
  4. Upload all documents in a PDF format. Standard PDF is increasingly rejected by the automated validator
  5. Complete the online declaration and consent form
  6. Pay the applicable renewal fee through the portal’s secure payment gateway
  7. Note your application reference number

Renewal Processing Times and What Causes Delays

For a complete, correctly formatted application, the DHA’s target processing time is 10 to 15 working days. If the file is flagged for manual review, expect 20 to 30 working days. Peak submission periods in January and September regularly extend these timelines.

The most common causes of delays and rejections at renewal are:

  • CME shortfall: The portal checks your CME balance automatically. A shortfall halts the application immediately
  • Expired Good Standing Certificate: must be dated within three months of submission, not just valid at the time of issue
  • Wrong document format: PDF A is required. Standard PDFs are rejected by the automated validator
  • Name mismatch across documents: your name must be consistent across your Emirates ID, DHA file, and all submitted documents

What Happens If Your DHA Licence Lapses

If your licence expires before you complete your renewal, you enter a grace window of up to six months. During this period you can still renew, but the late penalty applies from the first day post expiry and you cannot legally practise until the renewal is complete.

After six months, the file closes. A new application is required. The process starts again: fresh DataFlow PSV, full document submission, and all associated costs and timelines. This is not a theoretical risk. It happens regularly to professionals who delay and then find an unexpected complication in their file.

Frequently Asked Questions: DHA Licence Renewal

Q1: How long before expiry should I start my DHA licence renewal?

Start at 90 days before expiry at the latest. The renewal window opens at that point. Starting earlier is not possible but there is no benefit in waiting. If your CME hours need to be completed or your Good Standing Certificate needs to be obtained, those processes take time. Give yourself the full 90 day window.

Q2: Can I renew my DHA licence if I am currently between jobs?

Yes. Your DHA License Renewal Process is personal to you, not tied to a specific employer. However, you will need a current Malpractice Insurance Certificate. If your previous employer’s insurance has expired, you will need to arrange personal malpractice cover before submitting your renewal. Confirm the DHA’s current requirements for the specific category of cover required.

Q3: Do I need to sit the Prometric exam again for renewal?

No. The Prometric exam is required for initial DHA registration only. It does not apply to standard renewals. If your licence has lapsed completely and you are required to submit a fresh new application rather than a renewal, the exam requirement may apply again depending on your profession. Confirm with the DHA if you are in this situation.

Q4: What if my Good Standing Certificate takes longer than expected to arrive?

Begin the GSC request process at least six weeks before your intended renewal submission date. GSC processing times vary by country and institution. If you are waiting for a GSC from a jurisdiction with known delays, start even earlier. A renewal application submitted without a current GSC will be rejected. There is no workaround.

Q5: Can I change my scope of practice at renewal?

A scope change is not a standard renewal. It requires a separate application and may trigger a new Professional Qualification Requirements (PQR) assessment. Do not attempt to process a scope change through a standard renewal form. Contact the DHA’s Health Regulation Sector or seek specialist licensing advice before proceeding.

Q6: What is the renewal fee for a DHA licence in 2026?

Renewal fees depend on your professional category. Physicians and dentists pay AED 3,000. Nurses, midwives, and allied health professionals pay AED 1,000. Pharmacists pay AED 2,000. Late penalties of AED 600 for physicians and AED 200 for nurses and AHPs are added on top of the standard fee if renewal occurs after expiry. These figures are confirmed for the 2026 cycle.
